Meet An Alkaloid: Aria Vega

Each month, we are delighted to introduce you to one of the members of the Alkaloid Networks community, a coworking space on the Eastside Atlanta Beltline. This month we visited with Aria Vega of Lustery.

What are you working on right now?

I’m producing a weekly podcast for adult industry brand Lustery. I’m also a freelance sex journalist and recently wrote an article for Giddy about how the Motion Picture Association of America censors sex on screen.

Who is your target audience?

My target audience is anyone who is looking to be a part of more nuanced conversations about sexuality and relationships, and novel ways to understand them.

What is a common misconception about the sex industry?

A lot of people think that because I’m a sex writer that I have a ton of sex, or that my sex life is perfect. It’s strange, because people don’t assume their doctors are all in perfect health. There’s still so much stigma around sex in this country, which is a big part of what motivates me to do this work.

What is your big picture vision for your business?Giddy Aria Vega Sex Journalist | Alkaloid Networks

I’d love to produce a documentary series about how movies and TV have affect our real-life sex and relationships. We absorb so many messages from the media that undermine our desire to truly connect, and I want to bring more awareness to that.

What is your superpower?

I genuinely believe that everyone has at least one thing in common with everyone else in the world, and I have a knack for finding it when I meet someone new.

What is your favorite business or productivity tool?

I love Evernote, the cloud-based notetaking app I’ve used for ten years. It’s gotten me through college, blogging, and now freelancing!

What book should every entrepreneur read?

I think every entrepreneur should read the biography of a giant in their field. Leaning about the setbacks and hardships of successful writers has helped me so much to build resilience.

Why Alkaloid?

I felt welcome here right away, and never forgot that impression.

What is your favorite amenity at Alkaloid?

The outside patio is an incredible spot to unwind when I need to give my eyes a rest. I like to people watch and admire the graffiti on the walls enclosing the parking lot.

If you were working from Alkaloid during the pandemic, why and/or how are you using the space?

It’s a huge privilege to be able to work safely from home while the pandemic rages on, but I can be easily distracted while I’m there. There’s always some household chore that I’m hyperaware is undone, other people audibly at leisure. At Alkaloid I can totally tune in to my projects. Also, having a workspace that’s accessible 24/7 is perfect for me, because I tend to work at odd hours.

What advice would you give someone considering coworking?

It’s fantastic if your work is naturally solitary, and you’d like to build some camaraderie into your day.

Can you provide a soundbite about your experience at Alkaloid?

Alkaloid has been an essential component of my pandemic working life.
